5 Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs to Be Replaced

Nobody wants to replace their air conditioner before they have to. But holding onto an aging, underperforming system can end up costing you more in repairs and energy bills than a new installation would. Here are five signs that your AC is telling you it is time.

First, age. The average central air conditioning system lasts 15-20 years with proper maintenance. If your system is approaching or past that range, you are living on borrowed time. Parts become harder to find, efficiency drops, and the risk of a catastrophic failure increases with every passing summer.

Second, rising energy bills. If your cooling costs have been climbing year over year despite no change in usage, your system is losing efficiency. Modern air conditioners are significantly more efficient than those made even ten years ago. A new system can cut cooling costs by 20-40%, which adds up quickly in our humid New England summers.

Third, frequent repairs. The industry rule of thumb is simple: if a repair will cost more than half the price of a new system, replace it. Even if individual repairs are modest, the cumulative cost of multiple service calls in a single season is a strong signal that the system is wearing out across the board.

Fourth, inconsistent temperatures. If some rooms are comfortable while others are too warm, and this is a change from how the system used to perform, the compressor or blower may be failing. While ductwork issues can also cause uneven cooling, a system that used to maintain consistent temperatures but no longer can is showing its age.

Fifth, your system uses R-22 refrigerant. R-22, also known as Freon, was phased out of production due to its environmental impact. If your system develops a refrigerant leak, the cost of R-22 is now extremely high because supply is limited to reclaimed stocks. In most cases, this alone makes replacement the smarter financial decision.
